Heat sinks which is used with LEDs are to absorb and disperse heat from the LED diode and to the heat sink. Air circulating around the heat sink can help to cool it. Too much heat in LEDs will damage LED phosphor, cause lower light output, change color or decrease lifespan. But it is unfortunate that the most common issue we see in LED lighting applications stem from too small of a heat sink or none at all.
